Created using an 1833 engraving by artist Vollmy, our Stargazer print features a night sky filled with thousands of shooting stars. Vollmy’s work depicts the earliest recorded Leonid Meteor shower, in which more than 240,000 meteors fell from the sky in one night to the amazement and astonishment of onlookers in towns and villages across North America. We like to think that 240,000 wishes were made that night too! The detailed moon on the sleeves comes from astronomy artwork produced at the Camille Flammarion Observatory near Paris in 1899.

100% viscose (derived from plant fibres such as bamboo and wood). For casual days, we’ll be wearing ours over light-washed jeans and a soft tee or lightweight sweater, then adding sneakers for a relaxed, pulled-together look. We also love it layered over a mini dress with strappy sandals and a small crossbody bag for a playful day out. For work or evening, pair it with tailored trousers or the matching Artist Pants, a simple tank and ballet flats. And for days when you want a little extra presence, we love it over a monochrome base in noir or white with statement accessories — elegant and radiant, with a little bit of celestial magic!

Leonid meteor showers — a rare and spectacular phenomenon — are so named because they appear to radiate from the constellation Leo. The great Leonid shower of 1833, which is featured on our print, astounded onlookers with an incredible show that truly lit up the sky. One account estimated that over 100,000 meteors fell per hour that night! It was so significant that several nations of Native Americans marked it in important ways — including the Lakota, who reset their calendar to mark the day. Abraham Lincoln spoke about seeing it firsthand, saying “I sprang from my bed & rushed to the window, and saw the stars falling in great showers! But looking back of them at the heavens I saw all the grand old constellations with which I was so well acquainted, fixed and in their true places.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0591/3018/3859/files/Stargazer-Matine-Duster-Mid-Length-Market-of-Stars_1.webp?v=1787006375
